Academically, I'm worried about Tot.
Years ago, in her preschool years, we had her screened for speech. There were several issues, including articulation and lisping. We also felt like she struggled with information retrieval. These days, we still see the same challenges with retrieval. Tot struggles with expression and comprehension. The best way to explain it is this: It's as if she has a filing cabinet in her head, complete with folders. But the problem is that the papers of information aren't put back in the correct folder when she uses the information so the next time she needs it, she can't find it. She has to sort through the whole cabinet instead of going straight to the folder like most of us would.
- If you ask her what is wrong, she can't tell you exactly what the problem is. She has the vocabulary, it's just a struggle for her to express herself.
- If you give her multi-step directions, she can't follow them. Even at seven, she struggles. While some of it is inattention, most of it is because she can't find the information in her head.
- She repeats herself all the time. This is her way of processing through what she is saying.
- Her memorization skills are non-existent.
Right now we're in a holding pattern. I'm watching and monitoring and waiting to see how this year continues to play out. The good news is that Tot is not frustrated and doesn't feel like she is struggling or is challenged. If she felt differently, there would need to be a different course of action.
